Homeschool Tours / Field Trips

The 2024-2025 Field Trip Season has ended.

Thank you for an incredible year!

To book a field trip for the 2025–2026 academic year, please visit this webpage in August 2025 for updated scheduling information.

LIGO in Livingston Louisiana offers field trips to homeschooled children as well as children attending public and private schools.  Field trips occur on a daily basis Tuesday - Friday.  LIGO's Science Education Center is a unique field trip opportunity that allows students to interact with scientists and engineers doing real science, and to experience hands on science through our interactive exhibit hall.

Time:  Field trips vary in length from 2 - 3 hours.

  • 2 hour field trips consist of a tour and time visiting our exhibit hall which consists of 50 interactive science exhibits (a mini-science museum)!
  • 3 hour field trips consist of the tour, extended time in the exhibit hall & time to eat lunch if across lunch time.

Cost:  There is no cost (yes, the field trip experience is FREE)

Lunches:  Students & adults must bring their own lunches with them to LIGO as there are no facilities to buy lunches on-site!!!

Number of students:  We expect to accommodate up to 64 people per field trip.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Vehicles MUST REMAIN ON SITE DURING THE FIELD TRIP.  LIGO Livingston is in a remote location & we are sensitive to vibrations, therefore for the safety of the children and in order to keep LIGO's instrument working well, adults MUST remain on-site with their school-children while at LIGO.
  • Fill out a field trip form (when available).  The earlier you fill it out the better!  LIGO's field trip spots fill up quickly.

Note:  During typical school hours we prioritize school field trips from school teachers that had recent teacher professional development with LIGO.  If you want to maximize your chance at getting a field trip slot, you can aim for school vacation times.
